Sterile Processing Technician (part-time, 3 days/week) - Imperial Calcasieu Surgical Center

Job Summary:  Responsible for ensuring instruments, objects, devices, and equipment in healthcare environment are cleaned, disinfected and sterilized, which includes all equipment and re-usable supplies.  Must test equipment and assure it is in working order after each use.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  Include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

1.         It is preferred that he/she will have had at least 1 year experience in the surgical area, i.e.:

a.         Sterile Processing Technician

b.         RN

c.         Surgical Technician

d.         Or other areas that require the knowledge of sterility

 

2.         He/she must possess good knowledge of the scientific principles of Sterile Processing techniques and management; must be knowledgeable of the mechanics of all major items of equipment used in the Sterile Processing Department and sterile supply area.

 

3.         Must be able to communicate effectively with OR staff and leaders.

 

4.         He/she will demonstrate initiative, independent action and good judgment.

 

5.         He/she will work effectively without constant supervision, and be flexible and adaptable to changing conditions.

 

 

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         He/she will maintain adequate records and documentation of sterilization procedures and practices.

 

2.         He/she responsible for handling and recall of outdated supplies/instruments.

 

3.         He/she will maintain correct procedure for cleaning, decontamination and sterilization of surgical instruments.

 

4.         He/she will be responsible for maintaining quality improvement standards in those assigned areas under their supervision.

 

5.         The Sterile Processing personnel will be responsible for ensuring that the weekly and daily cleaning of the department is maintained.

Education and/or Experience:  High School graduate or equivalent preferred. He/she must possess good knowledge of the scientific principles of Sterile Processing Department techniques and must be knowledgeable of the mechanics of machines used in the sterile supply area.

 

Language Skills:  Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to effectively communicate situations to superiors and to other employees of the organization.

 

Reasoning Ability:      Ability to apply reasonable understanding needed to carry out detailed written and/or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving variables in standardized situations and execute when directive is given.

While performing the duties of his/her job, the employee is regularly required to use hands, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, hear and talk.   The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Must have good visual acuity.

 

Work Environment:   The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters daily while performing the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.  The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and risk of radiation. The employee is potentially exposed to hot steam from autoclaves. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions which pose hazard risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environmental is usually moderate.

 

Comments:  The individual in this position comes in direct contact with patients who are undergoing surgical procedures.  Contact with body fluids and hazardous waste material are a possibility of the job.
