SURGICAL TECHNICIAN- Imperial Calcasieu Surgery Center

Exempt: NO Supervisor: TEAM LEADER

 Day Shift: 6:30am until cases are closed. Occasionally 5:30am or 6:00am arrival time depending on schedule.


Possess knowledge and skills in sterile and aseptic techniques. Has the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon in caring for the patient to make the procedure as smooth and efficient as possible. Prepare and scrub for cases as assigned. Maintain instruments, medication, supplies and equipment required for each procedure. Pull cases up to 72 hours before case. Assist Purchasing Tech and Sterile Processing Tech with their job duties, which will assist you in preparing your cases and room.


1. Arrive at assigned time, change to scrub suit.

2. Check schedule for assignment and potential changes in the schedule.

3. Assist OR nurse to retrieve appropriate case cart for assigned OR and assist OR nurse in checking contents of case cart with physician's preference card. Accurately update preference cards.

4. Assist in wiping down room per policy.

5. Open appropriate sterile packs, instruments and other supplies needed.

6. Scrub hands, gown and glove and prepare sterile field per standards, policies and procedures.

7. After procedure, assemble used instruments for reprocessing. Remove equipment used and prepare for next procedure.

8. Transport appropriately covered instruments to decontamination.

9. Assist in cleaning case carts and putting away items not used in the cases.

10. Check OR schedule for the following day and prepare supplies for the cases.

11. Assist fellow staff members in room turn over.

12. As needed, assist in cleaning and preparing instruments for next day's cases.

13. Assist in stocking supplies when they arrive.

14. If unassigned, offer breaks and lunch relief.

15. Participation in committees is encouraged.

16. Remove OR attire and clock out before leaving center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Ensures sterility of all supplies and instruments during set up of surgical procedures.

2. Assists circulating nurse and surgical team in maintaining sterile environment.

3. Assists circulating nurse in gathering necessary surgical supplies and equipment. Is responsible for doing sponge, needle and instrument count pre and intra-operatively with the circulating nurse.

4. Gowns and gloves surgeons and assistants.

5. Retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming source/name of specimen with surgeon.

6. Assists surgeon in application of sterile dressings.

7. Transports all surgical equipment to appropriate cleaning areas. As needed, assists in sterile processing department with cleaning and reprocessing of instrument sets.

8. Interacts appropriately and effectively with all patients/others regardless of age or ethic background.

9. Uses Standard Universal Precautions, appropriate hand washing, personal protective equipment and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment of care.

10. Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance and participates in emergency preparedness drills.

11. Follows all equipment safety guidelines and is personally responsible for knowledgeable use and care of equipment.

Education and/or Experience: High School graduate or equivalency preferred. Completion of Scrub Tech program and certification preferable; or one to two years' experience as a Scrub Tech in multiple specialties or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred..

Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to superiors and to other employees of the organization.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, License, Registrations: Current CPR certification.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and risk of radiation. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environmental is usually moderate.

Comments: The person in this position comes in direct contact with patients who are undergoing surgery. Contact with body fluids and hazardous waste material are a normal part of the job.
