Registered Nurse or Respiratory Therapist (Part-time) Smoking Cessation Clinic

Position Location: Lake Charles, LA

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:  Responsible for evaluating, treating, and helping patients with a known nicotine addiction under the direction of a physician and nurse practitioner. Directs the care of the nicotine addicted patient using validated practices such as structured group meetings.

SUPERVISION REQUIRED:  Reports to Physician or Nurse Practitioners

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Not responsible for supervision of other care givers


  • Evaluates and treats adults who have a nicotine addiction within the guide of a certified Smoking Treatment Program
  • Escorts patients to group discussion rooms and prepares the patient for the session
  • Interviews patients and performs limited physical examinations
  • Conducts diagnostic tests including carbon monoxide monitoring
  • Complies with safety, infection control, and quality improvement policies and practices. Documents patient care for medical records.
  • Responsible for conducting group meetings for the purpose of smoking treatment in the nicotine addicted individual
  • Counsels and reassures apprehensive patients, assisting them with new treatment modalities and cessation skills
  • Educates patients in self- guided scenarios to better prepare them for their path of smoking treatment
  • Maintains patient confidentiality
  • Ensures the patient chart entries are made accurately and in a timely manner, forwards charts as appropriate
  • Performs other tasks as assigned
  • Observes records and reports patient’s conditions and reaction to treatment.
  • Ensures appointment preferences are given to patients in emergency situations.  Greets patients. Screens patients for appropriate information. Instructs patient in collection of tests.
  • May require pulling and filing charts 


  • Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, chemistry, physics, microbiology, pharmacology, and mathematics.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures and tests, equipment, patient assessment, and smoking treatment guides.
  • Knowledge of teaching patients how to care for themselves in real life high risk situations regarding relapse in smoking.
  • Skilled in applying clinical practice guidelines, ACT center program guidelines, respiratory health promotion, and disease prevention.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:  Louisiana RN or RT license.  Will be required to attend a Tobacco Treatment certification course and become a certified tobacco treatment specialist (CTTS).


  • Minimum one year of RN or RT experience in an acute care setting or medical practice setting. Experience in smoking treatment education preferred.
