RN - PRE-ADMIT/PRE-OP/PACU

Position Location: Imperial Calcasieu Surgical Center

JOB SUMMARY:† †Using the nursing process, the licensed nurse will assess, coordinate and deliver care to meet the identified needs of patients whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities may be compromised due to the event of surgery or influence of medications given for their operative or other invasive procedure.† The nurse will provide teaching for the patient throughout the continuum of care.† He or she will provide support and back up for personnel by performing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Include the following.† Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Communicates appropriately with peers, management and physicians, patients and patientís family members.
  2. Encouraged to participate in at least one of the centerís committees.
  3. Adheres to surgical principals and practices as described in the centerís policy and procedures.
  4. Participates in the centerís staff meetings and inservices offered.
  5. Maintains CEU as required by State and centerís policies.
  6. Demonstrates competency in admitting, recovering patients from regional, local, IV conscious sedation, monitored anesthesia care and general anesthesia for pediatric, adolescent, adult and elderly patients.
  7. Demonstrates competency in pre-admission, pre-op, PACU, and discharge process.
  8. Pre-op and Post educator.
  9. Demonstrates competency in preparing and administrating medication.
  10. Demonstrates competency in teaching patients and family member or significant others.

Education and/or Experience:† Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.† Maintains a current nursing license in Louisiana. Maintains continuing education hours as required for licensure.† One-year experience preferred in nursing for all departments.† One-year experience preferred in PACU or ICU for PACU Department. CPR Certified. ACLS and PALS Certification required for PACU/discharge areas within 6 months of employment, and encouraged for other departments.

Language Skills:† Ability to read and interpret documents such as physician orders, laboratory results, safety rules, operating and technical instructions and procedure manuals.† Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Reasoning Ability:† Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.† Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, License, Registrations:† Current nursing license from the State of Louisiana and current CPR certification. ACLS and PALS certification required for PACU/Discharge areas within 6 months of employment, and encouraged for other departments.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to chemical fumes or airborne particles.† There is a risk of electrical shock, exposure to radiation and occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.† The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Comments:† Decision-making is limited to the scope of the job; however, decisions made have a direct impact on the lives of patients.

SUMMARY OF MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

The nurse of the Surgery Center is a licensed professional nurse who is responsible for the total nursing care of patients recovering from surgical anesthesia.

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SPECIAL SKILLS:

Adequate clinical knowledge and skills to plan, evaluate, and perform the quality of nursing care, which meets the standards of nursing established by the surgery center.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


1.†††††††† Nursing practice includes systematic continuous assessment of patient condition.† Nurse ensures data is collected, documented, and communicated.††Nurse analyzes data to determine appropriate interventions; designs and coordinates implementation of plan of care to achieve patient outcomes.

2.†††††††† Continuously measures patient progress toward designated outcomes and revises plan

of care and interventions as necessary.

3.†††††††† Ensures the physicianís orders are followed for all patients.

4.†††††††† Applies knowledge, skill, and judgment in providing patient care.

5.†††††††† Promotes and participates in providing accurate recording of medications and treatments given to the patient.

6.†††††††† Reports significant observations and information to the surgeon and † † † † † † ††††††††††††Anesthesiologist/CRNA.

7.†††††††† Assesses the patient, reports pertinent information, performs appropriate interventions, and evaluates patient responses.

8.†††††††† Evaluates the performance of assigned co-workers.† Reports progress or need for improvement to the Team Leader.

9.†††††††† Promotes the improvement of nursing care within the center.

10.†††††† Conforms to and promotes acceptance of established objectives, policies, and †††††††††††††††††† procedures.

11.†††††† Assists in maintaining a stock of supplies and equipment for the unit.† Promotes proper †††† utilization of them.

12.†††††† Follows chain of command.† Communicates reportable situation to appropriate personnel † in a timely manner.† Maintains confidentiality of management information, displays discretion and good judgment in communication methods.

13.†††††† Adheres to all approved center's policies and procedures.† Notifies Team Leader of any†† † deviation from approved policy.

14.†††††† Assists in the orientation of new employees to center.

15.†††††† Able to accept counseling from Team Leader in a positive manner.† Displays ability and †† desire to initiate corrective action.

16.†††††† Becomes familiar with the center's FIRE, SAFETY, AND DISASTER PLAN, and his/her role in the event of each.

17.†††††† Ensures timely completion of variance reports when indicated.

18.†††††† Cost effective in materials management.† Assumes responsibility for timely verification

of supplies used in the center.

19.†††††† Maintains satisfactory attendance.† Notifies the Team Leader if unable to report to work as defined in the Employee Handbook.

20.†††††† Is punctual in arriving for duty on assigned workdays.

21.†††††† Other duties as may be assigned within the scope of assigned job.
