Collector / Patient Service Representative

JOB TITLE: Collector / Patient Service Representative

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

To collect delinquent accounts and pre-collect on procedures by performing collection procedures in accordance with established credit policies.

SUPERVISION REQUIRED:

Reports to: Precert/PT Account Manager

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

N/A

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1) Help patients with account questions either by phone or in person.

2) As patient calls about account will make arrangements for payment and note accounts accordingly.

3) Set up budget plans as needed

KNOWLEDGE:

1) Adequate and appropriate levels of oral and written communication of the English language

2) Basic math

3) Basic keyboarding and computer

4) Basic knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding is helpful

5) PPO and HMO insurance company plans

6) Collection laws

EDUCATION:

High school diploma or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

1) Previous collection experience (preferably in the medical field)

2) Working with the public

3) Handling complaints

4) Making quick and logical decisions

5) Collecting accounts

6) Dealing with attorneys, collection agencies and the DA office is helpful

REQUIREMENTS:

5) Excellent attendance and punctuality

DUTIES:

1) Help patients with account questions either by phone or in person.

2) As patient calls about account will make arrangements for payment and note accounts accordingly. Set up budget plans as needed.

3) Verify all available insurance claims have been filed, if necessary move charges to insurance bill type and reprint or re-file claims.

4) Review account status before appointment to make notes for patient to be sent to billing department about balances and or to make payments on accounts.

5) Work patient correspondence.

6) Code and adjust bankruptcy and litigation accounts and file records into chart.

7) Make recommendations to manager regarding collection procedures and credit policies as needed.

8) Perform other tasks as assigned.

ABILITIES:

1) Ability to persevere in collection efforts in face of criticism.

2) Ten-key ability needed.

3) To work with the public, sometimes in stressful situations

4) To diffuse angry and unhappy people

5) To communicate one on one with physicians

6) Logical thinking and decision making

7) Basic computer knowledge and skills are needed

8) Good communication skills are necessary

9) Troubleshooting skills

10) Microsoft Word and Excel skills are helpful

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Possible exposure to hazardous materials, conditions, and infectious diseases.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

1) Fine motor skills bending, stretching, sitting, standing, and walking while on duty.

2) Long periods of typing may be required.

3) Lifting of 50 100 pounds may be required.

4) Ability to relate to people and situations with good judgment and integrity

under stressful situations.
