Cast Tech- Center for Orthopaedics

Position Location: Lake Charles, LA

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:  Assists physicians and nurses with the care and treatment of orthopaedic patients.  Specializes in casting, bracing and splinting.







  • Applies and removes a variety of splints, casts and requests X-rays as indicated under the direction of a physician.
  • Performs special procedures as windowing and wedging, and assists the physician in complex special procedures as removal of pins and application of traction.
  • Positions patient for procedure and notes the degree of discomfort experienced by the patient.  Also instructs patient in case care, wound care, swelling, and how to remove and apply splints.
  • Responsible for inventory, ordering and receiving of all casting supplies and equipment.
  • Performs related duties as required.



  • Considerable knowledge of the techniques and methods used in applying casts and splints.
  • Considerable knowledge of human anatomy and skeletal structure.
  • Skilled in the application of casting materials and splints.
  • Ability to recognize secondary medical problems such as decubitus ulcers, wound infection, chaffing, etc.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with orthopedic doctors and their patients.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:  High school diploma or equivalent in addition to completion of an orthopaedic training program.  National Orthopaedic Technologist certification is preferred.



  • At least one year of experience is preferred.


ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:  Medical office setting.  Frequent telephone calls and other interruptions, which requires being able to handle a fast-paced work environment during entire time at work.   Must be able to prioritize multiple projects.  Must maintain strict confidentiality and exercise professionalism when interacting with staff, managers, supervisors, physicians, external customers, etc.


PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:  Requires physical effort including the abilities to sit or stand for an extended time and to push, pull, squat, twist, turn, lift, bend, stoop and reach overhead. May require lifting 50 to 100 pounds.   Exposure to possible Hazardous Materials/conditions and infectious diseases.
